The town was named Tiberias for the Roman empire Tiberius. Herod Antipas built the town. there are ruins of the baths he built. Tiberias is one of the four holy cities of Judaism. Now days Tiberias is a popular turists location for it's springs and more than 40 kilometers of shoreline of the sea of Galilee which is 208 meters below sea level. Israelis call the sea of Galilee by it's biblical name Kinneret which was the name of and old city to the northwestern side of the lake. The sea of Galilee is the main source of water for the Israeli population. Tiberias has an Hotel strip on the sea of Galilee shoreline. Due to water pumping the shoreline water level lost 4 meters. According to Christian tradition, Jesus performed several miracles.
